Canciller: Legend & Legacy

The medallion that became our emblem

Argentine winemaking pioneers Juan Giol and Bautista Gargantini travelled to France in 1909 to purchase a 75,000-liter oak barrel, which was decorated by a famous artist with two bronze reliefs.

One year later this impressive barrel won an award at the international exhibition in Buenos Aires celebrating the 100th anniversary of Argentina’s independence.

By then their winery, La Colina de Oro, was the largest in the world.
A prestigious guest at the exhibition, the Infanta Isabela of Spain, recognized the winery’s accomplishments with a gold medal on behalf of the Spanish Crown. Thus, Canciller was born.

Spanish for chancellor, Canciller has played a historic role as international ambassador for the wines of Argentina ever since, and the infanta’s gold medallion is featured on every bottle of Canciller to this day.

It was 1910. Refined and elegant, the Infanta Isabel de Borbón had arrived in Buenos Aires. Her smile caught everyone’s eye, suggesting kindness and intelligence.

She came with humility as a representative of the Spanish crown, honoring the centenary of a revolution, and the achievements of a proud ex-colony.

Her visit became a milestone for relations between Argentina and Spain. It also marked the birth of Canciller.

Our Wines

Grandparents, fathers, mothers, and grandchildren come together to uncork stories of the present and the past: of who we are and what we dare to dream. Canciller aligns with this sense of living in time. Since 1909 our wines have been comfortable with each passing generation, and on every table.

MENDOZA

Terroir Excellence

The natural characteristics of the Mendoza region create rich, fruit-driven wines with complex aromas and flavors, and impressive structure.

Mendoza’s unique terroir factors result from its privileged location at the foot of the Andes Mountains. They include extremely low annual precipitation, a wide diurnal temperature variance in summer featuring hot days followed by very chilly nights, and mixed alluvial, sandy and stony soils with excellent drainage, ideal for complex, well-balanced wines.
